You are cordially invited to the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics Public Sector Roundtable for a discussion of government transparency and accountability after Smith v. City of San Jose.
On March 2, 2017, the California Supreme Court held that when a city employee uses a personal email account to conduct public business, the writings may be subject to disclosure under the California Public Records Act. While open government groups have praised the opinion as a victory for transparency, local governments are left to figure out how to implement the mandate in a fashion that is fiscally responsible and is sensitive to the privacy rights of public officials.
On Friday, September 29th, San Jose City Attorney Richard Doyle will join us to discuss the Smith case, and its aftermath. Please join us for lunch and what promises to be a lively discussion. MCLE credits will be available for attorneys.
DATE: September 29, 2017
TIME: Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. The program will begin at noon.
LOCATION: Santa Clara University, Vari Hall
FEATURED SPEAKER: Richard Doyle, City Attorney of San Jose
