Make a Commitment to Continue these Conversations
Going to college is an exciting time for your son or daughter. And in the end, the choices about drinking, sexual behavior, healthy living, financial management, nutrition, and eating behaviors are his or hers to make. However, you have an important role in preparing your student to make responsible choices. Often, students make choices without thinking how those choices will affect them later. By sharing the information in this booklet beforehand, you can help your student make mature choices and grow into a healthy, independent young adult. While you may not be able to actively monitor your student while he or she is away from home, you can be available to talk and listen. We encourage you to have ongoing conversations as your student navigates his or her way through the college years. Remember, your student still needs your wisdom and guidance to help him or her make the most of his or her experience.
