Mission and GoalsThe School of Engineering will be known and treasured, in Silicon Valley and beyond, for the impact of its graduates and faculty on improving the human condition through engineering education, practice, and scholarship. The mission of Santa Clara University's School of Engineering has always been to prepare our students for professional excellence, responsible citizenship, and service to society. Our dynamic programs in civil, computer, mechanical, and electrical engineering, applied mathematics, and engineering management have long provided the theoretical and practical instruction necessary for professional excellence. Recently, recognizing the burgeoning fields of bioengineering, nanotechnology, and sustainability, the School of Engineering has initiated programs and research in these areas as well. Combining expert instruction and a commitment to personal attention with a pedagogy that begins from an ethical perspective leads to a class of engineers who are not only technically outstanding, but who are excellent citizens, as well. In today's global society, with more and more manufacturing jobs being outsourced to China, and India leading the charge in development, it is vitally important to our students’ success and to the success of our nation that we not only provide an excellent technical education for our students, but that we encourage our engineers’ creativity and assist them in seeing their ideas through to fruition. In the School of Engineering, we believe that entrepreneurs are not just born, they are developed and nurtured, and we are committed to being an active partner in that process. At SCU, we are “engineering with a mission”—a mission to serve our students, our valley, and our world. Our mix of rigorous academics, project-based learning, and values-based education nurtures students of competence, conscience and compassion into the leaders of tomorrow--leaders who are well-equipped to face the engineering and ethical challenges of the future. |
