The field of Mechanical Engineering includes all aspects of design, development, control, and manufacture of mechanical systems and energy conversion systems.
Mechanical engineering is essential to the proper design and manufacture of nearly every physical product in our modern world. As such, mechanical engineers are a fundamental resource for most industries, and work in interdisciplinary environments. Mechanical engineers must have the ability to see broad perspectives across disciplines and industries, and yet solve very local and specialized problems.

Throughout the Winter Quarter, the Mechanical Engineering Department will be offering weekly seminars. Each Wednesday from 4:00 - 5:00 pm in EC 326 guest speakers will be on campus to discuss their research, trends in technology and different practical areas of mechanical engineering. Speakers will include researchers, scientists and engineers from Lockheed Martin, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Chroma Sun, and Exponent, to name a few. All are invited to attend starting on January 6, 2010 and running each Wednesday through March 10, 2010.

Team California, comprised of students from all disciplines at Santa Clara University and California College of the Arts took Third Place in the U.S. Department of Energy's 2009 Solar Decathlon Competition. Team California finished 3rd overall, taking 1st Place awards in both the Architecture and Communications categories. Congratulations to all those students who worked tirelessly on this project.

Engineering students in the Robotic Systems Laboratory are performing
mission operations for a NASA satellite that was launched on May 19. The
satellite contains an experimental biological payload that is exploring
how microbes may become resistant to drugs used to treat sick
astronauts. SCU students have engineered all of the communications and
control systems used to operate the spacecraft, and they are performing
their own research on advanced techniques to detect and diagnose faults on
remote spacecraft.

Congratulations to Professor Christopher Kitts for receiving the School of Engineering's Award for Teaching Excellence for 2008. Professor Kitts, the head of the Robotics Systems Lab, teaches courses and conducts research in the areas of dynamics, controls, robotics, and mechatronic systems. Besides being an outstanding teacher and researcher, he serves well as advisor and mentor to many students. We are very proud and lucky to have such a unique and dynamic individual as our colleague .
